In August of 2014, a car driven by NASCAR's Tony Stewart struck and killed Kevin Ward Jr. while racing sprint cars at Canandaigua Speedway in Upstate New York. Smokescreen is a eye-witness account of the accident. It is targeted toward fans of car racing and people with an interest in current events involving celebrities. On August 9th, 2014 I was enjoying one of my best runs in a 360 sprint car – until directly in front of me, the unthinkable happened. Driving the race car directly behind Tony Stewart, I had a firsthand view of the impact that took the life of Kevin Ward, Jr.. What I wasn't prepared for was the difficulty I would have in making sense of it all and just getting on with my life. I knew that I needed to do something in order to find the same sense of normalcy that my life had before I witnessed the accident. That 'something' was a self-imposed therapeutic exercise of recording everything I could remember about the accident. While trying to work things out in my mind, I became increasingly disgusted with how the media sensationalized the accident, rather than simply reporting the facts as they became available. This disquiet continued later when, as a Grand Jury witness, I was further perplexed by the judicial process where, at least from my point of view, rather than it being an objective search for truth it seemed the verdict was pre-decided and everyone was merely going through the motions. Intentionally divided into 13 chapters as a dedication to the memory of Kevin, Smokescreen is an inside look at sprint car racing what happened on that race day and how sometimes racers are their own worst enemy. The book follows me from my childhood, growing up the son of a local racer to driving a race car for the first time to 'walking in mile in Tony Stewart's shoes'. In each chapter I tell some anecdotes, drawing parallels to people and things related to the accident and the surrounding media storm.The most difficult admission I make is that at any moment I could be either Tony Stewart – the driver of a car involved in a fatal accident, or Kevin Ward Jr. – the driver so enraged with what had happened that he put himself directly in harm's way. This book generated considerable controversy and debate on a couple of the racing forums I post on, due to the argument that the author is profiting off tragedy. The book is extremely respectful, and is not sensationalistic in any way. That being said, I am surprised that each of the previous verified purchase reviews gave the book five stars. As someone that has been around racing my entire life, I didn't feel that this was a five-star book. The author acknowledged several times in the book that he is a racer, not a writer, and I fully respect that.The book is 272 pages, but it is double spaced, so it could have been written on far fewer pages. In addition, a couple of the chapters feel as though they were simply included to make the book longer or to reach 13 chapters, since the author mentioned in the book that he wanted the number of chapters to be a tribute to Kevin Ward Jr. One of the chapters, "The Numbers Game," talks about superstition and the coincidence of numbers but doesn't really seem to have much to do with the rest of the book.
Author Danny Varin wrote that the book was designed for non-racing fans who don't really know much about the sport and only learned about the incident through news coverage. As a result, the book feels kind of simplistic for veteran race fans. At different points in the book, the author explains what qualifying is, what heat races are and how the feature line-up is determined.
The book is ok (although pricey at $29), and the author is up front about his lack of writing skills. One point I will give Varin huge credit for is having the courage to address the awful ESPN interview with Stewart Friesen, since Friesen was not even at the race in question when the tragedy occurred. Varin also delicately discusses the conflict of interest involved with Jessica Zemken and Stewart Friesen weighing in on a topic involving Tony Stewart.
The author did not deserve the criticism he received from some racing fans for writing this book. He tackles a tragic topic with respect and honesty, but it wasn't a $29 book to me. Anyone who has been around racing or race teams for any amount of time will not learn a whole lot here. The book is more suited for readers wanting to learn about the basics of how local dirt-track racing works

Really liked the book, very informative
Good to hear another driver's perspective and first hand account took place that fateful night. I have been personally involved since that night having my own view and perspective on the incident ... it was refreshing sharing another's thoughts and feelings!
Danny , A great read and I couldn't put the book down until the end.... I've spent my life around racing since 1956 and I can relate to people who don't understand what's going on around the track race night. What a tough story to tell and I am extremely proud to know of you and your Dad....Job well done!!!!
Received my copy yesterday and I could not put it down. I admit I was skeptical at first when I heard about the book but after reading the entire book in less than a day, I can say I loved it! It is much more than just a story about Tony Stewart and Kevin Ward Jr. It is a book about dirt track racing and an objective view on how a tragedy like this could occur. The book does not point the finger at either party involved but rather explains how this could have happened. This truly is a must read for any race fan. Kudos to you, Mr. Varin, for telling the story the way you did. Job Well done.
I thought Danny did a superb job translating his memories of the episode he witnessed. He was also very informative with Dirt Track racing and I recommend this book a must read in the Racing Community. With all the positive thoughts being said after reading this book I hope it will help with the Healing for everyone involved
Very interesting read. If you are a newbee to racing it is required reading, not because of the Tony Stewart connection but for the understanding of dirt sprint and stock car racing
Excellent book the kid is a second generation racer I know his dad personally. He had a front row seat to what happened but the book is still more about him racing with the accident tied in and he pays tribute to Kevin at the end
